 Data note: January 17th, 2022
The U.S. is reporting 787,879 new coronavirus cases, down significantly from last week as less than half of all states provided an update on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is a federal holiday.

However, the data continues to indicate that the Omicron wave has peaked at the national level, although the situation varies greatly by state. The seven-day average for daily cases stands at 716,188, down significantly (-95,875) due to limited reporting.

Meanwhile, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has dropped to 154,208 (-130), the second decrease in as many days. Although reporting is limited, this drop follows 9 straight days of declines in the growth rate.
